Rewards schemes 'offer long-term value'

Reward schemes featured on credit cards offer consumers "long-term value", according to an expert.

Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury's Credit Cards, has stated that such initiatives move plastic away from just purely being a "borrowing item" into a "transactional product".

He went on to explain why his company's link to the Nectar reward scheme may prove attractive to some consumers.

"It will be [a pull] because there are a lot of rates out there and just about every card will have some introductory rate on it, but not all of them have rewards schemes attached to them...We have both," he explained.

"A Sainsbury's credit card with Nectar on it means I can apply for that card, have that card, and every time I spend there I'm going to be earning points on that."

Recent figures by APACS found that there were almost 31 million cardholders in the UK in 2007

It was also found that the average person had 2.4 credit cards and 1.6 debit cards.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18663476-ADNFCR
